Kilimanjaro
stands at a majestic 19, 340ft (5,896m) It is the greatest mountain
in Africa and one of the largest volcanoes ever
to break through the earth's crust. It is the highest free standing
mountain in the world. The mountain boasts an experience of all 4 climates
present on Earth. The climb commences with a walk through arid regions
at temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. This then leads to the tropical
rainforests higher up. Further still, we will encounter our British temperate
climate and above that the freezing -21 degrees, arctic ice fields near
the summit.
Every human being without exception experiences the effects
of altitude sickness above 12,000ft. The severity of the effects will
be unknown to the expedition members until arrival at the height. Although
an above average fitness level can reduce the chances there are no guaranteed
preventative measures. Mild effects produce symptoms such as impaired
judgment, dizziness and nausea The expedition aims to reduce the effects
as much as possible by acclimatizing after each significant height gain.

Accommodation
up the mountain will be in tents and water supply will be using
purification tablets
in stream water. Mosquitoes do not survive above 10,000ft
Each day involves on average 5 hours walking until the summit day
which necessitates commencing at midnight for the most arduous part. This
is likely to be the toughest day that will be experienced, involving
3,600ft of ascent 7,200 ft of descent.
The day will consist of 12-15 hours walking
and will take each expedition member to their outer limit. It is
then that teamwork will come into
its own. We will all make it to the top of the crown of AFRICA a
memorable and emotional time for us all. |
